Why is Ethanol fuel not the solution to the environmental fuel crisis?

The answer to this question is simple if one understands the chemical formula composition of ethanol and gasoline. Once we obtain the chemical formula we can perform simple calculations to determine whether ethanol or fuel additive is most beneficial to the environment in terms of carbon production and footprint.

Firstly, a chemical formula is defined as a formula used to describe the types of atoms and their numbers in an element or compound.

Chemical Formula of Ethanol: C_{2}H_{5}OH

Weight of Carbon atom, C = 12

Weight of Hydrogen atom, H = 1

Weight of Oxygen atom, O = 16

Molecular weight of Carbon content in Ethanol: 2 ´ 12 = 24

Molecular weight of Ethanol: (2 ´ 12) + (1 ´ 5) + (1 ´ 16) + (1 ´ 1) = 46

The proportion of carbon in the ethanol portion of fuel with 10% ethanol with can be determined by performing the following calculation using the molecular weight of Carbon:

(24 ÷ 46) ´ 0.10 = 0.05217 = 5.22 %

The same calculations can be performed for 90% Gasoline.

Chemical Formula of Gasoline: C_{6}H_{6}

Molecular weight of Carbon content in Gasoline = 6 ´ 12 = 72

Molecular weight of Gasoline: (6 ´ 12) + (1 ´ 6) = 78

The proportion of carbon in the remaining 90% Gasoline is determined by performing the following calculation using the molecular weight of Carbon:

(72 ÷ 78) ´ 0.90 = 0.8308 = 83.08 %

Combining the total Carbon percentages from 10% Ethanol and 90% Gasoline to yield the total Carbon content:

5.22% + 83.08% = 88.30%

Our Inferno Fuel Additive has no carbon whatsoever and it constitutes 20% of the fuel. In this case, the carbon in the gasoline portion of the fuel can be calculated as follows:

(72 ÷ 78) ´ 0.80 = 73.85%

In conclusion, it is evident that by volume,10% ethanol combined with 90% gasoline burns much more carbon (88.30%) than Inferno Fuel Additive (73.85%) in the environment.
